Main Detention Release Endpoints

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says all people arrested in the county are processed through the Main Detention Unit. They remain there until the court requires release or a sentence leads to another placement. A release can therefore mean a return to the community after bond, recognizance, time served, sentence completion, dismissal, or another court authorization. It can also mean that SJSO handed the person to a different custodian.

The release record should name the event and, when maintained, the destination or receiving agency. A bond entry does not end the criminal case. A court dismissal can explain why release was authorized, but the filed order is not the jail's physical release time. A transfer ends Main Detention Unit custody only. The next search must follow FDC, another county jail, the U.S. Marshals Service, BOP, ICE, the Community Work Release Center, or another listed destination.

Confirm Main Detention Release

The official SJSO inmate-search entry was temporarily down on the research date and did not expose a historical release archive. A missing live roster entry is not enough. Booking can answer an immediate jail or bond question, Records can supply the retained release event, the Clerk can explain the court action, and Florida VINELink can provide a custody signal. These channels corroborate different facts.

1. Start with the official SJSO inmate-search page. When the search is unavailable, use the contacts published there instead of an unverified copy.
2. Call Booking at 904-209-3125 for immediate custody or bond status. Do not treat a verbal status check as the formal release report.
3. Search the St. Johns County Clerk case system. Match the case with more than a shared name and read the docket in date order.
4. Request the booking and release record from SJSO Records. Ask for the date, time, type, authority, and destination or receiving agency if maintained.
5. If the report shows a transfer, continue with the receiving system. Departure from the Main Detention Unit is not proof of community release.

Main Detention Release Records

A focused public-record request should seek records SJSO already maintains. Useful identifiers include the full name, approximate booking and release dates, booking number, incident or case number, and date of birth when lawful and known. Ask for the booking report and the release or disposition record, including the release timestamp, release type, authority, destination, receiving agency, and signed property-return form if those items are maintained and releasable.

The SJSO public-record request page links to the GovQA portal and explains alternate submission routes. SJSO does not publish a flat price for a booking or release record on the reviewed page. Fees may apply, so request an electronic copy and a cost estimate. Florida law allows redaction of exempt portions while requiring release of segregable public material.

Main Detention Intake Scope

The Main Detention Unit is a county jail operated by the SJSO Corrections Division. SJSO describes it as a 664-bed facility for men and women awaiting pretrial proceedings. Every person arrested in St. Johns County is processed there, even if the later endpoint is bond, a county sentence, CWRC, state prison, another agency, or another documented disposition.

This intake role explains why the Main Detention Unit record is the right first county record. It does not make the SJSO system a state-prison, federal, or immigration release database. The official FDC facility directory did not identify an operating state prison in St. Johns County, and no standalone federal prison or ICE detention center was identified in the county. Those systems become relevant only after a documented transfer or separate custody event.

Main Detention Court Release

An eligible person can post bond after booking. Otherwise, first appearance follows. Seventh Circuit material says St. Johns first appearance generally occurs within 24 hours absent exceptional circumstances and is typically conducted by Zoom around 8:30 a.m. The judge addresses probable cause, bond, and release conditions. That hearing may create the authority for release, but it does not state when jail processing will finish.

Read the Clerk docket for the bond order, plea, sentence, dismissal, probation order, revocation, or later order tied to custody. Then compare it with the SJSO timestamp. A person may bond out while the case stays active. Conversely, a signed order can precede physical release because the jail must receive and process authorization, check holds, and finish required release steps.

Bond release

Release under a court-set financial or legal condition while the case can remain open.

Recognizance

Release based on a promise to appear rather than a paid bond.

Time served

A sentence outcome crediting confinement already completed.

Transfer

The end of SJSO custody followed by another custodian's control.

Note: The date of a court filing can support the reason for release, but it is not the physical release timestamp.

Main Detention Release Property

The SJSO handbook says intake property is inventoried, sealed, and kept in the secured Property Room. At release, property that was not previously authorized out is returned. The booking deputy and released person sign a form that verifies the return. County-issued items must also be turned in. Missing jail property can delay processing.

The person needs the facility identification card for release. The handbook lists a $6.28 replacement charge for a damaged or lost facility ID. This is a release-process detail, not a public fee for obtaining the release record. Former inmates may separately retrieve their own SmartJailMail photos, messages, and scanned mail without charge for up to 30 days after release by using their inmate number and password.

For third-party property pickup, SJSO says to call 904-209-1430 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Confirm that the receptionist has the inmate-signed property release form before going to the facility. If an FDC transfer is planned, family may pick up property that FDC will not accept, or it may be mailed at the inmate's expense. Property logistics can support the timeline, but only the release or transfer record confirms the custody event.

Leaving Main Detention After Release

County materials identify public transit and a Government Center shelter in the Lewis Speedway government and judicial complex. Current service should be checked through St. Johns County public transit and the county's bus-shelter information. The reviewed jail sources do not promise a ride, escort, release stop, or family waiting area.

No official source provided a fixed release door or daily release time. A planned pickup should therefore be based on direct confirmation, not an assumed schedule. Bond or court authorization can occur before the jail completes the physical steps, while a transfer may use an agency movement process rather than a public departure. Transit access near the complex must not be described as jail-provided transportation.

Main Detention ICE Release Handoffs

A historical 2019 St. Johns County 287(g) Warrant Service Officer agreement shows why a criminal release timestamp can coincide with immigration custody. The document discussed serving immigration warrants at scheduled criminal release and an up-to-48-hour transfer framework. It must be labeled historical. It does not prove that the same agreement or procedure is current.

When a Main Detention Unit release report names ICE or an immigration detainer, check the ICE Online Detainee Locator System for current custody. ODLS is not a dependable historical release database, and no result does not prove community release. ICE can also be contacted through its field-office directory or Detention Reporting and Information Line when the locator is inconclusive. The safe statement is precise: SJSO custody ended, and the receiving record determines what followed.
